Foreign dignitaries join Kenya’s Mashujaa Day celebration

President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, and the Prime Minister of Mozambique Maria Benvinda Levi, arrived in Kenya ahead of the national Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20, 2025 at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.

Their presence promotes deeper diplomatic and economic ties. The Mashujaa Day theme for 2025, “Transforming Lives through Sustainable Energy Solutions,” offers a stage for continental collaboration on green growth and sustainable development.

Most countries in Africa share a history that is rooted in freedom from colonialism. In this, Kenya finds ties with Senegal, Mozambique and other African countries. The foreign dignitaries offered heartfelt condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

President Faye had met Raila Odinga in November 2024 when he was seeking support for his bid as chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC). Faye showed support for Raila’s bid highlighting the benefits of continental integration.

“I am deeply committed to the duty of remembrance our heroes deserve all honours, they deserve our respect they deserve our admiration,” he said in his speech and commemorated their struggle for Kenya’s independence.

Prime Minister Maria said, “the festivities and commemorations of this Mashujaa Day are not only a time of remembrance and tribute but also a moment of introspection, reflection, for a nation and time to honour the deeds of its finest sons and daughters who fought, died, and sacrificed for the noble cause of liberation, nation building, preservation, and consolidation.”

She added that this occasion is also one of reaffirmation of Kenya’s vision, values and determination. “These are elements that continue to serve the foundation and compass for building a Kenya that aspires to be evermore developed, just, and inclusive.”

As Mashujaa Day celebrations continue in Kitui County, the presence of foreign guests adds an intercontinental layer to Kenya’s national holiday.

By hosting the honoured guests, Kenya is symbolizing that Mashujaa Day also includes leaders who are shaping Africa’s future.
