Raila Jnr installed as the leader of the Odinga family as per the luo traditions through “Nyasi Mar Sidho” ceremony

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s son, Raila Odinga Jr., will now assume the role his late father played as the patriarch of the Odinga family, following the performance of the “Nyasi Mar Sidho” rituals a Luo tradition that loosely translates to a graduation ceremony.

According to Luo customs, the ritual is usually conducted four nights after the burial of the patriarch.

During the ceremony, Raila Odinga Jr.’s head was shaved to signify a new beginning.

He was subsequently handed the traditional symbols of authority, which include a hide, a shield, a spear, and a three-legged stool items historically used by elders in the Luo community.

After being officially installed, Raila Jr. performed a traditional chant gweyo and dance symbolizing his acceptance of the responsibilities of leading the family.
