1. Anuradhapura
Start your journey in the ancient city. This was Sri Lanka’s first capital and is packed with sacred and historical sites. Don’t miss:
Sri Maha Bodhi (sacred Bo tree)
Ruwanwelisaya stupa
Jetavanaramaya (massive brick stupa)
Isurumuniya Temple (famous rock carvings)
Twin Ponds (Kuttam Pokuna)
2. Mihintale
About 25 minutes from Anuradhapura. This is where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka. It’s a peaceful hilltop temple complex with ancient ruins, rock steps, and panoramic views. Best visited at sunrise or sunset.
3. Aukana Buddha Statue
Roughly 1 hour southeast from Mihintale. This 12-meter-high standing Buddha is carved from a single granite rock and is over 1,500 years old. A quick stop, but worth it for its craftsmanship and serenity.
4. Sigiriya (Lion Rock)
From Aukana, head to Sigiriya (about 2 hours). This ancient rock fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. Climb to the top for stunning views, explore the gardens, and see the famous frescoes and mirror wall.
5. Dambulla Cave Temple
Just 30 minutes from Sigiriya. This is a series of Buddhist cave temples filled with over 150 Buddha statues and intricate murals. It’s the best-preserved cave temple complex in the country.
6. Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park
Both parks are around 30–40 minutes from Dambulla or Sigiriya. Choose one based on where the elephants are (local guides can help decide). Go on a jeep safari, especially in the afternoon, to see large herds of wild elephants — especially from July to September.
7. Polonnaruwa
About 1.5 hours from Minneriya/Kaudulla. This medieval capital is full of well-preserved ruins, including royal palaces, temples, statues, and the Gal Vihara — a series of stunning Buddha statues carved into granite. Rent a bike or tuk-tuk to explore the ancient city efficiently.
Optional Stops Nearby:
Ritigala: A forest monastery between Habarana and Dambulla, perfect if you want quiet nature and ancient ruins off the tourist path.
Medirigiriya Vatadage: Close to Polonnaruwa, a peaceful circular shrine surrounded by jungle.
Habarana Village Tour: Great for cultural immersion — try traditional cooking, canoe rides, and bullock carts.
