From towns to fortified cities thanks to the Affordable Housing Programme

North Rift Region, 28th October 2025: Residents of Elburgon Town in Molo, Nakuru County, have welcomed President William Ruto’s promise to turn the town into a city, following the commencement of construction of the Boma Yangu Michinda Social Housing Project.

The President laid the foundation stone for the mega project, that will deliver 2,680 housing units to approximately over 9,300 new homeowners, seeking a share of livelihood within town centre of the rich farming community.

“We are working with the County Governments to ensure we give an opportunity to every Kenyan to own a dignified living space as they work and trade. We are keen to deliver our promise and are currently implementing the Affordable Housing Programme in 111 constituencies across the country,” he explained.

The residents say that this project will spur growth and urbanization in the area with many of the working population, finding work and a dignified home stay in the prising of Elburgon town.

The mixed-use project offers 680 one-room units, 1,330 two-room units and 670 three-room units, with an additional 35 shops, set in place along with the housing units.

The residents will also enjoy within the secured boundary wall, green spaces, a children’s playground, underground water storage, classroom blocks, school dormitories, school offices, a service building and paved parking spaces.

At the same time, construction of 382 housing units in Marigat town, in Baringo County has commenced with President Ruto laying the foundation stone, Tuesday afternoon.

“This programme is one of the key pillars of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). For this specific project in Marigat, we have already engaged over 80 local workers on-site with numbers expected to grow as we continue to implement the various steps of the project. We have reserved contracts for door, window and fitting fabrication to the local Jua Kali artisans, injecting millions of shillings into the informal economy,” he added on to say.

Developed on a 4.45-acre parcel, the project has studios, one to three-roomed units under the social housing typology; two- and three-bedroom units under the affordable housing and two- and three-bedroom units under the market typology.

The key facilities in this project include a kindergarten, club house, social hall, commercial stalls, a borehole, pump houses, power reticulation, street lighting, paved parking and green spaces.

The development project at Marigat integrates a broad spectrum of design features that ensure barrier-free access to shared amenities for women, the elderly and persons with disabilities. Moreover, the two projects have incorporated energy-efficient designs, rainwater harvesting and native landscaping to support climate resilience.
