A Nairobi court has ordered the Investigating Officer (IO) in the case of Ongodo Were to explain the whereabouts of $5,000 that was allegedly not documented during recovery.

The court heard that the accused claimed he had surrendered the money to an officer identified as Nzau, who was said to be in possession of a CCTV recording that could shed light on the transaction.

Lady Justice Diana Kavedza directed that officers bythe name Nzau and Chemusing be summoned to appear in court and present the money.

The court further ruled that if the two officers fail to comply, the matter will proceed to an inquiry to determine what happened to the funds.

It also emerged that several other items belonging to the accused including a wristwatch and academic certificates were not recorded in the official inventory.

The judge further instructed the Investigating Officer to avail the full list of items recovered from the accused persons in the murder of the late Ong’odo Were.

The matter will come up for further pre-trial next week. Meanwhile, the prosecution has opposed bail application, arguing that the circumstances surrounding the case have not changed since the last hearing.
