The body of former TV journalist Kimani Mbugua has been flown to Nairobi from Mombasa by Kenya Airways through the support of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who fully covered the transportation and related expenses.

The body is currently preserved at the Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home along Thika Road as burial preparations continue.

Confirming the development, Sonko said he has walked closely with Kimani through his personal struggles and remains committed to ensuring he receives a dignified farewell.

“I have walked with Kimani for a long time, and even in his death, I will still walk with him to ensure he receives a befitting send-off. It is unfortunate that whatever happened, happened,” said Sonko.

He added that his Sonko Rescue Team will cater for all mortuary and logistical expenses as the family finalizes burial arrangements.

Kimani passed away while undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation centre in Mombasa, where Sonko had enrolled him for therapy following a recent relapse. The former journalist had been battling mental health challenges for some time.

In addition to facilitating Kimani’s transfer, the Sonko Rescue Team also supported the burial of five victims who lost their lives during a weekend stampede at Kasarani, where mourners had gathered to view the body of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga.

Sonko further revealed that his rescue team facilitates between 10 and 20 burials weekly for families facing financial hardship across the country.

Among the recent cases assisted is that of Baby Liz, a young girl who tragically died after being struck by a stone while playing at St. Emmanuel area in Kayole. The Sonko Rescue Team stepped in to cover all funeral costs and provide support to her grieving family.

Sonko reaffirmed his commitment to continuing his humanitarian work through the initiative, emphasizing that the program remains dedicated to restoring dignity and hope to bereaved families during their most difficult moments.
