The Thai royal household declared a one-year mourning period for members of the royal family and household following the passing of monach Queen Mother Sirikit who died on Friday 24th October at the age of 93.
The palace said the Queen Mother passed away late on Friday, following complications from a bloodstream infection she developed on October 17.

Sirikit, who had been largely out of the public eye since suffering a stroke in 2012, had been hospitalized since 2019 due to multiple illnesses.
The government has ordered all public offices to fly national flags at half-mast for one month and directed government officials to observe mourning for one year, in honor of the late Queen Mother’s legacy.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul canceled his scheduled trip to the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur following the announcement of Sirikit’s death.

Speaking to reporters, he said he would travel briefly to Malaysia on Sunday to sign a cease-fire agreement with Cambodia, but would return immediately afterward to lead the nation in mourning.

Born in 1932, Queen Mother Sirikit was the wife of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned from 1946 to 2016. She played a vital role in restoring public confidence in the Thai monarchy after World War II, gaining admiration for her charitable work, fashion sense, and national pride.

In later years, Sirikit occasionally waded into political issues, her presence often symbolizing the monarchy’s enduring influence amid Thailand’s shifting political landscape.

Her death marks the end of an era for the Thai royal family and a moment of national reflection for millions of Thais who grew up during her decades-long public life.
