Description

Step back in time to Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s illustrious first capital and a revered UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded over a millennium ago, this sprawling archaeological wonderland is far more than a collection of ancient relics—it remains a living, breathing center of Buddhist devotion. At its spiritual heart stands the Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree grown from a cutting of the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Cultivated over 2,200 years ago, it is the oldest historically authenticated tree on earth, drawing pilgrims in a continuous stream of white-robed reverence.

Beyond this living shrine, the ancient city unveils a landscape punctuated by architectural marvels. Gaze in awe at the colossal brick dome of Ruwanwelisaya stupa, a shimmering white monument that seems to touch the sky, or explore the serene stone columns and lotus pools of monastic complexes where monks once meditated. Ingenious ancient engineers also left their mark in the form of vast, still-functioning reservoirs (tanks) that glisten under the tropical sun, evidence of a sophisticated hydraulic civilization.

Given the site’s immense scale—stretching over 40 square kilometers—the best way to navigate between soaring stupas, crumbling palaces, and tranquil meditation paths is by bicycle or tuk-tuk, allowing you to set your own pace. To fully appreciate this open-air museum without the interference of seasonal rains, plan your pilgrimage between May and September. During these dry months, the sun illuminates the brick and stone in golden hues, and the skies remain clear for unforgettable exploration.
